Hello! It’s a lovely thing to find an upside to a downturn. As such, FBi is made to feel all warm inside by the constant flow of supportive notes from friends of the station, like all these ones we’ve reprinted below. It means a lot to us to hear that we mean a lot to you. With your help, we’ll stay on air.

Take it away, Nick!

NICK CAVE

“FBi, one of Sydney’s only independent stations, a station that champions local music, arts and culture is crucial to the cultural fabric of the city. It must be saved.”

After the jump: Chris Taylor, Rusty Hopkinson, Luke Davies, Rose Byrne and so many more! Like a set of steak knives!

BRENDAN COWELLL

“FBi, put simply, is the best radio station in Sydney, pumping out the hottest beats, pithiest modern diatribe, and coolest social commentary. When I first heard about the station I was so excited that finally there would be a number on the dial to fill that void for young people and FBi did not disappoint. Finally, a station that speaks to us in a bold and honest way. Finally music we love and finally intelligent presenting. If we were to lose this Sydney would be much poorer for it.”

PATIENCE, THE GRATES

“FBi stands for Fun, Badarse and Independent! FBi radio are responsible for so much music enjoyed by the greater Australian community through their constant nurturing of young independent bands. Without FBi many local musicians and artists would not have the confidence, support, opportunities and success they have now. FBi radio plays a super important role in the radio eco-system and in their Sydney community. It is important we save FBi for all of these reasons, and many more. If you’re a music lover, an arts lover or you just want to support local and independent get along to their fundraising gigs or become a supporter today.”

ROSE BYRNE

“FBI is crucial to the cultural fabric of our city of Sydney - an independent, intelligent and classy radio station, the last of its kind. To see it go would be unacceptable and I urge each and every single one of you listeners to show your support to keep FBI is its rightful place.”

NASH EDGERTON

“FBi is a huge supporter of local independent music, arts and culture. It would be a great loss to lose this important voice from the Sydney airwaves”

CHRIS TAYLOR, THE CHASER

“When I think of the sounds of Sydney I think of property development jackhammers, car horns blaring on Parramatta Rd and FBi Radio. FBi is one of the reassuring constants in the life of this city: a radio station that not only broadcasts the music of Sydney, but which acts as a kind of aural town hall where anyone can turn up to speak or listen, or just feel part of a community. In radio terms it’s the opposite of Alan Jones or Kyle Sandilands. Rather than instruct us what to think, it reminds us that’s it’s okay to think for ourselves; and helps us to discover music and culture and ideas in a democratic way that no other radio station in Sydney does. A local beacon for inquiring ears.”

RICHARD PIKE, PIVOT

“FBi has supported Pivot from the very beginning, and we have relied on their independent voice to get to the right audience. Not only for us but for many other bands, artists and the younger cultural community, it is the foremost cultural outlet on radio in Sydney.”

LAWRENCE LEUNG

“FBI doesn’t just have it’s finger on the pulse, it is actually the heart of Sydney.”

ADAM ELLIOT

“FBi have been supporting my blobs of plasticine for years, and now it’s your turn to support them”

URTHBOY, THE HERD AND ALL OF ELEFANT TRAKS

“Elefant Traks reckon FBi is one of the most important avenues for sharing music with Sydney – it’s vibrant, open-minded and always ahead of the game. To understate FBi’s cultural significance to Sydney is to do an injustice to this great little champion radio station that boxes way above its belt. Sydney needs FBi but FBi also needs Sydney. Let’s support it right and proper, now.”

HOLLY THROSBY

“I think FBi has become an essential part of the independent music and arts scene in Sydney - a scene which seemed comparatively invisible before FBi began broadcasting. I think, as a radio community, that it both promotes and creates the cultural identity of the city.”

RUSTY HOPKINSON, YOU AM I

“We need radio stations such as FBi. Why? Well the thought that radio will become the sole domain of droning talkback jocks and mundane music is very real and very worrying. It’s nice to turn on a community station, like FBi, and be invigorated by music that comes from somewhere else other than the soulless world of commercial ambition. To lose FBi and stations like it would be tantamount to getting rid of a world that’s always been “left of the dial”.

AL GRIGG, THE RED RIDERS

Give or take a couple months, Red Riders and FBi are the same age. I still remember driving back from taking our first band shots, listening to Ben Lee, Sarah Blasko and a bunch of others communally singing the station into life. It’s hard to understate how much the scene in Sydney has changed since those days. Then there were about four bands worth seeing, maybe three decent venues, and no one going out to see anything. It’s really no coincidence that since FBi’s started the scene has erupted with bands, venues, club nights, and, most importantly, an audience for it all. I honestly feel that without FBi’s support none of this would have happened. Not only as a band, but as music loving Sydney-siders, Red Riders owe a helluva lot to FBi. A Sydney without them is a Sydney I don’t wanna live in.

JACK LADDER

“FBI Radio is Sydney’s carotid artery for alternate music and culture, without it we’d surely have a stroke”

ALEX BURNETT, SPARKADIA

In these times of reported “gloom and doom”, there is even a greater need for music, performance and the community that it represents. Without FBi, the city of Sydney and would suffer dramatically and could have the capacity to become a city of “gloom and doom”.

TIM DERRICOURT, DAPPLED CITIES

Since it’s inception, FBi has become without any doubt, the most important force for music in Sydney. For both older bands like us and those just starting out FBI has offered a place where you can feel comfortable showing new music, experimenting with new ideas or just having a good chat about what is going on in your career. Because of this vision of openness and willingness to try something new, FBi has built a new confidence in Sydney music and essentially created a scene where before there was none.

LUKE DAVIES, Author “Candy”

“There is no independent radio voice in Sydney quite like FBi. To lose it would be a terrible shame. No other station blends interesting talk and interview with a lot of fine contemporary music. FBi is a blessed oasis in the middle of the FM radio wasteland.”

LOST VALENTINOS

“FBi played our first-ever demos way back in the day. They support independent music at a grass roots level like nobody else does, and I reckon it’s time we supported FBi aswell”

BEN LEE

“FBi is crucial to the Australian musician world as it offers a true alternative. Its so important for listeners to have options so that things don’t become stagnant and homogenous. I played the first FBi benefit about 15 years ago and continue to believe in its undeniable value.”

MARCUS WESTBURY

“FBI has become a vital part of the creative life of Sydney. Independent media that is interested in and engaged with the cultural life of the city means that artists, musicians and creative people in Sydney are supported and encouraged in what they do. FBI allows the creative life of Sydney to flourish.”

THANKYOU.

love, FBi.
